Man jailed after allegedly abusing elderly mother

VIENNA TOWNSHIP, MI (WNEM) -

A man is in jail after police say he neglected his elderly mother and stole thousands of dollars from her.

Police are saying the lack of medical care could have killed the woman.

The 80-year-old woman was living in a home that smelled of a pungent odor of feces, urine and garbage while being cared for by her son, David Riley.

Riley is in the Genesee County Jail, charged with vulnerable adult abuse second degree.

Sheriff Robert Pickel says conditions in the Vienna Township home were deplorable.

"She needed medications taken on a daily basis. And her care giver stopped taking his mother to the doctor over a year ago. Knowing that it could result in further medical complications and even death. He refused to take his mother to the doctor," says Pickel.

Sheriff Pickel says that Mrs. Riley lived on three thousand dollars a month and that she recently sold some property up north netting her fifty-two thousand dollars in that sale. The sheriff says all that money is gone.

It was neighbors who called investigators, requesting a welfare check. That's when the conditions were discovered, and the sheriff says we all need to keep our eyes and hears open.

"Somebody was concerned about it an we're encouraging neighbors to look in on neighbors. And look after the elderly. If you notice something that you think you're uncomfortable with, call us and we'll respect you're anonymity," says Pickel.

Mrs. Riley is currently doing okay and will be placed in assisted living. Her son is facing a four year felony.
