Missing Saginaw Spirit player found dead

Posted: Updated:

Michigan State Police confirm the body discovered in a store parking lot Tuesday afternoon is Saginaw Spirit hockey player, Terry Trafford.

Family and friends of the 20-year-old say they hadn't seen or heard from him in over a week. Tuesday afternoon, a Michigan State Police trooper spotted the green pickup truck Trafford was last seen driving as he left the Dow Event Center (where the team plays) last Monday. Police say the truck was in the parking lot of the Wal-Mart in Saginaw Township.

"Our trooper was patrolling the parking lot here today and observed a vehicle that matched the description of the vehicle that the missing hockey player was last seen driving. After further investigation by the trooper he discovered that there was a deceased male inside of the vehicle," stated Lt. Brian Cole of the Michigan State Police.

TV5 has learned that Trafford had recently been cut by the team. Right now police are not saying exactly how Trafford died.

The Saginaw Spirit released a statement Tuesday night saying in part:

"Our deepest condolences are with Terry's family and his friends both in Ontario and Michigan. Terry played on our team and was a member of the Spirit family for the last four years, and he will be missed."
