MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

An airplane carrying 47 people made an emergency landing at the Montgomery Regional Airport Monday afternoon due to a mechanical issue with the aircraft.

Airport spokesman Chip Gentry tells WSFA 12 News there was an issue with one of the plane's flaps and a "procedural" decision was made to contact the air traffic control tower to request and emergency landing.

The plane, a CRJ-200, which Gentry said was a Delta connection through Express Jet, was en route to Montgomery Regional from Atlanta at the time of the emergency declaration.

Gentry said when the plane landed safely, around 1:30 p.m., the emergency was canceled by the flight crew where the aircraft taxied under its own power to the gate. The passengers were able to safely exit the plane through the cabin door onto the boarding bridge connected to the terminal.
