Michigan lawmakers have given final approval to legislation intended to crack down on sales of stolen scrap metal. The bill passed 31-6 by the Senate Thursday is headed to Gov. Rick Snyder, who plans to sign it.
Michigan scrapyards that buy copper wire, air conditioners and catalytic converters will only be able to pay sellers by mail.
Scrapyards will have to take photos or video of metal they buy and the seller. Sellers could only be paid by check or money order, or they could redeem their money at an onsite ATM.
Legislators struck a deal on the legislation Wednesday, ending more than 2 1/2 years of work on the update to a 2008 anti-scrap metal theft law.
Thieves are targeting abandoned dwellings to strip copper wiring and other metal.
