A local man won $1 million after matching all but one number in the latest Mega Millions drawing.
Gary Shepherd, 62, from Owosso matched all the numbers except the Mega Ball in Tuesday's drawing. Shepherd says he always plays the same five numbers for the white balls, but interchanges the Mega Ball between 12 and seven, which are numbers in his birthday. This time Shepherd chose 12 for the Mega Ball instead of seven, and that was the difference between his $1 million prize and the $414 million jackpot.
Shepherd was actually out of state at the time he purchased his ticket. He bought it from a Publix in Pensacola, FL. Florida had more than 382,000 winners in this drawing, including one additional $1 million winner and its first-ever jackpot winner, who will split the $414 million jackpot with a winner in Maryland.
By the way, the winning numbers were 11-19-24-33-51. The Mega Ball was 7.
WNEM TV5 shows the Mega Millions drawings live on Tuesdays and Fridays at 11 p.m. Tonight's Mega Millions jackpot is $15 million.
