Cold case homicide closed

GENESEE COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

After more than a decade, investigators have closed the cold case death of a 10-year-old Mid-Michigan girl.

Cierra Shanee Nelson was first reported missing back on Nov. 26, 2000 after being seen near her home in the 4700 block of Birchcrest Drive in Flint. Despite a massive search, her body wasn't found until the following April, about seven miles from her home in Mount Morris Township.

Hundreds of tips were followed up on and several possible suspects were eliminated.

The Flint Police Department Violent Crime Task Force continued to investigate any new leads, but yesterday re-evaluated the case. That's when the decision was made to close the investigation because investigators believe the offender has died. That suspect's name has not been released.
