McDonnell seeks dismissal of public corruption charges

Posted: Updated:
RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

Lawyers for former Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell are asking a federal judge to dismiss a bulk of the charges he and his wife face.

The former-governor's legal team did not mince words. They said in a very short motion that the prosecution simply did not provide ample evidence that McDonnell ever offered to perform an "official act" on behalf of Jonnie Williams.

The governor's legal team has requested a hearing to discuss their belief that the charges against him are weak. It is their latest attempt to discredit federal prosecutors, clear the McDonnell name and keep him out of prison.

Judge James Spencer will hear the case to dismiss the charges in a hearing May 19.

So far, several attempts by the McDonnell legal team to derail the prosecution's case have been turned aside.

If they are unsuccessful in getting the charges dropped, the McDonnells will appear at their trial at the end of July.
