Flint Police close case involving murder of 10-year-old

FLINT, MI (WNEM) -

The cold case murder of a 10-year-old Flint girl has been closed and TV5 is learning more about why investigators put that case to bed.

Flint investigators closed the case of Cierra Nelson after saying the man they believe responsible for her death has died.

That man is being identified as 43-year-old Michael Willingham.

Willingham died earlier this month after he lead Shiawassee County sheriff's deputies and Bancroft Police on a chase and standoff, following a bank robbery.

Investigators believe the man hung himself after hiding out in a deer blind.

They're aren't saying exactly why they believe Willingham was behind the girl's death back in 2000.
