MT. PLEASANT, SC (WCSC) - Nearly 700 down, only 600 miles to go.

Virginia resident, Donna Street is embarking on a near 1300 mile journey, all while carrying an inflatable soldier on her back.

It's an idea ten years in the making.

"It's a great honor for me to be carrying this soldier like they have carried us," Street said.

The soldier, named the "Proud Protector," weighs six pounds, and stands approximately six feet tall. Street says the face mirrors the image of a close relative, but the body is symbolic of the entire U.S. military.

"I've been to Arlington National Cemetery several times, and when I look at those rows and rows and rows of tombstones, each headstone represents the blood of somebody," she said.

"Freedom is not free."

Along the way, the Virginia resident is also hoping to shake hands with one million people.  Using a clicker, Street is keeping track of every encounter on her East Coast journey.

"I'm like the military," she said.  "You cannot stop, you must go forward."

Joining Donna Street are her nephew and close family friend.  The three hope to make it to D.C. in time for Memorial Day.
