An Alexander County teacher has been honored as a hero after she saved the life of a five-year-old boy who stopped breathing at school.
A year ago, the family of five-year-old Kyler Bebber found out he had an enlarged heart.
His school, Ellendale Elementary, was alerted to the his condition and, since the beginning of the school year, some staff members were trained in CPR and the use of a defibrillator.
So when Kyler collapsed at school on February 18, several rushed to his aid.
Physical Education teacher Leah Robinson took the lead. "He was not breathing and had no pulse."
She grabbed the defibrillator and followed the procedures to shock Kyler's heart. When his condition failed to improve, she began CPR.
After two minutes, she says Kyler turned red. "He started to come to and began to cry and that was the best feeling in the world."
Kyler's mom Alisha says she is just glad people were trained and ready to help her son. "We are so blessed," she said. "I think God laid everything out for the right people to be here at the right time."
Kyler is now back in school but has a pacemaker. He also will need a heart transplant someday, says his mom. "Hopefully not for many years," she said.
In the meantime, family bills for travel and medical costs are mounting. The Sheriff's Office will hold a fundraiser Thursday, selling Chik-fil-A sandwiches with all proceeds going to the Bebber family.
