Local police are investigating after a body was found in an abandoned house in Flint Wednesday.
Cleaster Nelson says many homes her street have been vacant for nearly 10 years. She says she and her neighbors on Eastmont Drive have been trying to get the houses torn down for a while, worried they would be havens for crime.
"They tried to set the house on fire next door to my neighbor," recalled Cleaster Nelson.
On Wednesday, their worst fears were realized. A worker from the Michigan Land Bank stopped by to inspect one of the vacant houses and discovered a body inside. Investigators say it was the body of a female who appeared to be dead for several months.
Detectives from the Michigan State Police say they don't know who the woman is. But they did find an ID inside a bag in the house. Investigators say the ID shows a Michigan woman who has been reported missing.
Neighbors on Eastmont are startled by the discovery and even more eager for the abandoned houses to be gone.
"And then I feel sorry for the family, about their loved one up in that house dead," added Nelson.
