SAGINAW COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

A huge road construction project on the Zilwaukee Bridge in Saginaw County is now underway. Concrete barriers and orange barrels are being put in place this weekend and detours are in place.

It's the second year of a project that had drivers detouring around Saginaw County last summer.

Motorists will be forced to detour around the Zilwaukee Bridge.

The project is a $70-million investment to on the Zilwaukee Bridge. That work includes replacing bearings, pavement work, shoulder work and also work on the deck.

The southbound lanes were finished last year.

Until May 17, the northbound lanes of I-75 traffic will be detoured via I-675.

The northbound lanes are expected to completed later this year but there is still some work that will extend into spring of 2015.

MDOT says overall, this project will maximize the service life of the Zilwaukee Bridge and improve the overall condition of this section of I-75.

The next phase of construction concerning the bridge will be in mid-May.
