Fire safety program offer smoke alarms free of charge

SAGINAW, MI (WNEM) -

A fire safety program is providing smoke alarms to some Mid-Michigan homeowners. 10-thousand smoke detectors are being distributed by the Saginaw Fire Department, along with a safety evaluation of residents' homes.

Thanks to a federal grant, Saginaw residents will receive those smoke detectors free of charge.

Two out of three fire related deaths could've been prevented with a smoke detector.

In a bit of irony, a homeowner about 4 miles away lost everything in a fire. Her aunt tells TV5 the family strongly favors what the fire department is doing.

"I think its very good that they do that for people that can't afford or don't have one. It's great that they get out and let people know," says Saginaw resident Pamela Barron.

To qualify for a free smoke alarm, you must be a resident of the city of Saginaw. For more information, call 989-759-1393.
