SVSU baseball coach benched

SAGINAW, MI (WNEM) -

TV5 is learning that Saginaw Valley State University baseball coach Walt Head has been placed on paid administrative leave.

It is unclear at this time as to what prompted the decision.

Head did not coach the team's scheduled games on Thursday. Head has been coach of the team for 31 years.

His career record at the university is 844-606-6, making him one of the winningest coaches in Division 2 history.

University Director of Media & Community Relations J.J. Boehm said the move was necessary at this time. "We felt it was necessary to make such a decision at this time. We realize it is mid-season but we felt it was necessary in the interests of the health and welfare of our student athletes," said Boehm.

Boehm would not specify why the school took action against Head. He did tell TV5 that there is no criminal investigation involving the coach. Boehm also said the decision to remove the coach from the team was made after a series of issues, not just one with the Cardinal manager.

Boehm also says the university's move to put head on administrative leave is not due to the team's performance who had nine wins and nineteen losses entering play Friday.

"The performance of all of our employees is always a consideration. This was primarily done at this time to make sure that the health and welfare of our student athletes is given primary consideration," said Boehm.

Boehm didn't shed any light in to how the school believes head impacted the health and welfare of his student athletes. Boehm also said head will not be back this season. As to a final decision on the coach's future with the school, that remains uncertain.

SVSU emphasizes there is no criminal case involving the coach and that the investigation is administrative in nature.
