Customers complain about GM replacement vehicles

Posted: Updated:

The recent General Motors recalls have left some people in need of a free loaner while their car is getting fixed.

Some local consumers are finding out these replacement vehicles may not be as cheap as they thought.

"Into the thousands for a rental car. It's just that ridiculous," said Troy Turner after he learned that a rental car agent wanted him to pay insurance costs and sales tax.

It was for a rental car GM said would be free. After all, their 2006 Chevy Cobalt was under recall and they expected a free loaner. Troy and his wife said their options were limited.

"It doesn't leave you any choice. You either take the hit and the fees if you can afford it. If not, you drive an unsafe vehicle and see what's going to happen to you," Turner said.

The Turners said tax and insurance on their vehicle required them to cut a check for $90 per week. The service manager at Ithaca Chevrolet found a way to cut a deal so they didn't have to pay a dime.

"GM is telling us that if someone does get a rental vehicle that they will take care of it," said Craig Morrison, service manager at Ithaca Chevrolet.

If a car is under recall and the owner has to rent one to cover for it they should not have to pay the insurance and sales tax associated with the rental. In this case the dealer pointed it out. The car owner may need to make a special request. It's advice the Turners are quick to point out.

"Without the dealership actually taking care of us, GM wasn't actually doing it on their own," Turner said.

A GM spokesman said although every case is different, GM is making every effort to ensure those affected by the recall get reimbursed for the full amount of their rentals.
