Business owner pays for water bill mistake

Posted: Updated:
A local business manager was stunned to see her most recent water bill to the tune of $18,000.

Kim Haken runs the Columbus Laundromat in Bay City.

When she called the city to ask about the problem, she says she was told a billing mistake meant she was paying too little each month for more than a year.

Once they realized the mistake she was $18,000 behind, and it's due next week.

"I panicked. I got angry and tried to ring some bells and make some noise," Haken said. "We don't have it. It's a hardship."

The city has already offered a 10 percent discount on that bill.

City manager Richard Finn said it's an ongoing situation and they plan to meet with Haken next week to find a solution that works for both parties.
