Evacuation lifted after fire reported at propane facility

GENESEE COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

Fire crews responded to the scene of a fire at Webster and Garner Propane facility early Monday morning.

The facility is located between Vienna Road and Tacoma Court in Vienna Township in Genesee County.

A daycare near the facility was evacuated for a short time, but we've since learned that evacuation has been lifted. Over 100 children were forced to evacuate.

Samantha Mercier's children attend Peyton's Learning Place, the daycare facility in Clio. "It was very scary. I called everyone that I knew. I really freaked out at first," says Mercier. "Then they wouldn't let me down here so it was even scarier."

Clio's assistant fire chief Kirk Todd says 500 twenty pound propane tanks were stored in the building where the fire happened. The flames broke out in equipment used to clean propane tanks. Crews were able to get the fire under control quickly.

"Propane gas with empty and full tanks around means there's a lot of a lot of danger. So it could have been a whole lot worse. I think it could be safe to say that we dodged a bullet," says Todd.

The director of the daycare facility says the evacuation couldn't have went smoother. She says just last week they were practicing fire drills and they got to do one for real.

Chief Todd says the facility had just undergone a fire safety check. Everything at the facility is up to code, which he says may have helped limit the damage.
