Downtown Flint receives makeover

FLINT, MI (WNEM) -

A couple of big projects are underway that will change the landscape of downtown Flint, including the new home of the Flint Farmer's Market that is taking shape.

Once completed, the market will have everything from baked goods to flowers to spices and a place for a quick bite to eat.

"Now we'll have community space. We will have an absolutely gorgeous atrium. I've had several people who've been to big markets in Europe who've said, 'My gosh, your market's going to look just like a European market,'" said Flint Farmer's Market manger Dick Ramsdell.

The new farmer's market is scheduled to open in about eight weeks.

One block down the street the once tallest building in downtown Flint, the Genesee Towers, is just a pile of rubble now that gets smaller and smaller every day.

"We got through winter. A lot of debris still to be removed. Closing in on probably three to four weeks from the rubble being gone and that will automatically switch over into a construction site," said David Lurvey, owner of DW Lurvey Construction.

Rising from the spot will be what developers are calling Exploration Park, an educational place for children and green space for people to enjoy and another reason to visit downtown Flint.

"It's exciting. It's all coming together very quickly, very vibrant," Lurvey said.
