Vacation property should be checked after floods

Posted: Updated:

State emergency officials are encouraging people who own vacation properties in flood-prone areas of Michigan to check for possible damage following recent storms and flooding.

Properties along the Baldwin, Chippewa, Hersey, Manistee, Muskegon, Pere Marquette, Pine, Tittabawassee and Tobacco rivers have seen water damage caused by flooding, especially those along rivers in Newaygo and Osceola counties

Crews worked over the weekend to remove dozens of propane tanks floating in the Muskegon River as part of flood-recovery efforts.  Floodwaters dislodged them from riverfront properties.

Gov. Rick Snyder has declared a state of disaster for Newaygo and Osceola counties. Numerous homes flooded in the Evart area, forcing evacuations.

Service centers are open in Newaygo and Osceola counties to provide information and resources to residents affected by flooding.
