Mid-Michigan residents face fake IRS scam

Posted: Updated:

Residents in Clare County have been experiencing a new scam where a person posing as a sheriff's deputy claims they owe money to the Internal Revenue Service and shows up to their house to collect.

"It's a big red flag for us because it's obviously taking the scam one step further than the normal telephone calls," Sergeant Jennifer Tilson said.

Tilson is sounding the alarm after two scammers teamed up to dupe a couple of unidentified residents out of some hard earned money. Tilson said the victims got a call from someone claiming to be from the IRS. They were told there's a warrant for their arrest and their accounts were frozen.

Then a fake sheriff's deputy with a gun came to their home telling them to go with him to their bank. The pretend IRS employee told the victims he would unfreeze their accounts, but first he told them they needed to pay the IRS in the form of prepaid debit cards. Tilson said they complied, but experts say you don't have to fall prey to these scammers.

"You have the right to ask somebody for their ID and at that point they may just leave," Tilson said.

The scammers used a fake police car too.

"I believe it was just a white, older looking police type vehicle maybe like a Ford Crown Vic with, I believe, just sheriff on the side or police on the side. We don't have any vehicles that are just that plain," Tilson said.

Doing work for the IRS isn't something the sheriff's department does, Tilson said. She wants the perpetrators to know the long arm of the law is looking for them.

"We're constantly working hard to do what we can to put a stop to this," Tilson said.

The incident remains under investigation. So far no arrests have been made.
