Underage drinking may be to blame for brawl

IOSCO COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

A night of underage drinking gets out of hand and leads to violence, sending at least one person to the hospital.

Details are sketchy and all police will say is that the incident happened over the weekend in a wooded area in Iosco County.

The incident happened early Sunday morning during a party held in a heavily wooded area. Police say it involved 50 or so young people, when an altercation between a couple of those people at the party turned violent.

Police have not pinpointed exactly why things may have gotten out of hand and how often these kinds of parties take place in these woods. But they do say underage drinking was a factor.

"There is a legal age for drinking. Not a lot of good things happen during events like this where alcohol is involved. You have to be totally careful, it is against the law and be smart about your activities," says Iosco County Lieutenant Melvin Matthews.

The person was treated and released and police say this is an ongoing investigation and charges may be filed.
