Saginaw County Animal Control fined for violations

Posted: Updated:

TV5 has learned that the Saginaw County Animal Control shelter is being fined thousands of dollars.

At this point, the county has to pay $9,500 for a number of problems. These violations include euthanizing animals too quickly, improperly maintained cages and improper sanitation and food handling.

The state originally imposed a fine of more than $16-thousand but reduced it because the county has already taken steps to improve conditions at the shelter.

As long as the shelter remains in compliance, the county will not have to pay the bigger fine.

This comes on the heels of the shelter director, Kevin Wilken being placed on paid administrative leave.

The Saginaw County Animal Shelter has remained tight-lipped about that ordeal.

It's been months since Wilken has served as the director of the facility. Wilken has been on paid administrative leave since last December. Since that time, county leaders and Wilken himself have said very little about the embattled animal control director's future.

At this point, it is still unclear why Wilken was put on administrative leave. What is clear is that the county prosecutor received paperwork on Wilken. What that paperwork is about, and why it is in the hands of criminal prosecutor, is unknown.

You may recall TV5's report, asking tough questions of Wilken last July. Residents were concerned about the conditions at the animal shelter.

Wilken said that staff and volunteers at the facility try very hard to keep it clean and safe for animals.

The community just wants the animals at the facility to be safe. Ultimately, what happens next is up to the county board of commissioners.
