SAGINAW, MI (WNEM) -

Future engineers and contractors went head-to-head Friday in a local competition.

Middle and high school students had a chance to show what they're made of, with what they can make.

"A lot of moms and dads come and say, 'wow, my son made that,'" said Dr. Allen Papendick, president of Michigan Industrial and Technological Education Society.

The Ryder Center at Saginaw Valley State University was transformed into the 86th annual Industrial Arts Competition which included metal work, wood work, graphic design and architecture.

"Some of these students aren't going to be recognized for their academic achievements. Where here, they can recognize these students and say, 'hey, I'm important,'" Papendick said.

The students showed off more than their projects from the year. It was also a day of competition.

In one task, the students worked in teams to complete the best shed in one day. In another they raced tiny cars.

Not only did the students get a chance to compete, but they set up something to make pens to send to soldiers oversees.

With the smell of sawdust in the air, the main event was still the contests. Mount Pleasant junior Tia Febor won first place for her graphic design work.

"I made a monster truck and did it in graphics and entered it in that category. And I actually made it with a laser and wood, and entered it in that category too," Febor said.

Many of the students showcased were from in Mid-Michigan, but they said it was a great opportunity to see work from students all over the state.

"I think it's pretty cool to see my stuff here, it proves that I've put time and effort to make it all the way down here. And I mean, mine didn't place, but it's still pretty cool," said Joe Trapani, Mount Pleasant senior.

The showcase will continue Saturday at the Ryder Center on SVSU's campus. It runs from 8 a.m. to noon.
