Board likely to certify 2nd wolf-hunting measure

Posted: Updated:

Michigan is expected to certify a second referendum on hunting wolves for the November statewide ballot.

The secretary of state's office estimates the group Keep Michigan Wolves Protected collected more than 182,000 valid signatures of registered voters. That's about 21,000 more than needed.

The Board of State Canvassers has scheduled a Tuesday meeting where it's likely to certify the referendum.

The anti-wolf hunting group already got enough signatures to require a vote on repealing a 2012 law designating the wolf as a game animal. The Legislature responded by empowering the Natural Resources Commission to put animals on the game species list. The latest petition seeks to overturn that measure as well.

Another group is gathering signatures to continue wolf hunting in the state, which began last fall.
