Inmate escapes during transfer

Posted: Updated:

A 35-year-old man escaped from a Midland County Transport van while he was being transported from Isabella County to the Midland County Jail.

The suspect bypassed a locking mechanism on the van and escaped out of the back of the vehicle. The suspect exited the vehicle and ran when the van came to a stop at the intersection of Eastbound US-10 and Bay City Road. He crossed Bay City Road heading north through Valley Plaza Resort.

A 25-year-old Midland man received a text message from a relative alerting him to the escape. He decided to get into his truck and drive around the area. He found the suspect hiding by the US-10 overpass.

The 25-year-old told the suspect, who was still handcuffed, to get on the ground and law enforcement were on their way.

He said the suspect got up and started running again. Shortly after Officer Jay Poellet of the Midland City police arrived in the area and saw the 25-year-old waving to him.

The officer pursued the suspect and was able to take him into custody. The suspect was transported to Midland County Jail.

The incident was reported at 12:01 p.m. Tuesday and the suspect was back in custody at 12:16 p.m.

The suspect was being brought to Midland County to face charges for felonious assault and failure to register as a sex offender. His name is being withheld pending his arraignment on charges of escape.

The Midland County Sheriff's Office was assisted by members of the Midland County police and their K-9 unit, the Michigan State Police and their K-9 unit and the Bay County Sheriff's Office.

"I am extremely thankful for the vast support afforded out agency during this incident," Sheriff Scott Stephenson said.
