LANSING, MI (WNEM) -
Utility company Consumers Energy wants you to be aware of an ongoing phone scam that has been attempted on a number of Mid-Michigan residents.
Customers have reported being called and asked to immediately pay energy bills using pre-paid credit cards. More than 300 hundred incidents have been reported. At least 31 reports have come out of Genesee County.
A spokesperson for the company says officials have been actively working with local, state and federal authorities to break the crime ring, which appears to be originating from outside of the United States.
Consumers Energy officials are offering these tips to avoid the scam.
The company ever demands a payment over the phone on a specific card.
Never give personal financial information over the phone.
Warn others of the scam to prevent additional victims.
Call Consumers Energy if you think you are a victim.
