Local doctor accused of health fraud

Posted: Updated:

TV5 is learning new information in the case involving a Federal Bureau of Investigation raid executed at a local doctor's office Monday morning.

Dr. Gavin Awerbuch, a Saginaw Neurologist, is firmly in the crosshairs of the federal government and he has actually been under the microscope for quite some time.

TV5 caught the raid of Dr. Awerbuch's office on camera Monday. It is now known that undercover police officers posing as patients have been visiting his office since 2011.

That's according to a complaint filed in federal court.

In the document, Dr. Awerbuch is accused of writing unneeded prescriptions for patients and billing medicare and other insurers millions of dollars for procedures that were never provided. The complaint also shows that Awerbuch subscribes a medicine that helps treat cancer pain, called Subsys, than any other doctor in the country.

In fact, the complaint states that in a five year period, Awerbuch collected six times as much money from medicare for Subsys than the nearest U.S. prescriber.

Patients TV5 talked to say they think Dr. Awerbuch is a good doctor and they have a hard time accepting the news.

Officials say patients who want to get their records from Dr. Awerbuch should contact the FBI office in Bay City.
