Memorial to honor fallen police officers

SAGINAW, MI (WNEM) -

A new memorial wall was unveiled Friday, to honor fallen police officers.

The Saginaw Police Memorial Wall will serve as a reminder of the service and sacrifices made by local law enforcement.

"We were at the grocery store when somebody asked my mother had she heard that he had been shot," Cheryl Scott-Brown said.

She remembers the day she lost her father Leon back in 1967. He was a police officer killed in the line of duty, giving his life to protect and serve.

"As a child we really didn't know what was going on. As time went on that's when it sinks in that you don't have your father anymore," Scott-Brown said.

Leon Scott was one of eight of Saginaw's finest to be honored with a new memorial wall, paying tribute to those officers who died to make the public safer.

"It helps us to know that they haven't forgotten," Scott-Brown said.

Officers with the Saginaw Police Department said making this wall of honor a reality was important to them.

"They paid the ultimate sacrifice. They're gone but not forgotten. This is basically a symbol of gratitude for what they did for us," Sergeant Oscar Lopez said.

Lopez wanted something better than pictures hung from a wall for his fallen brothers, but he never imagined this new display of honor would look this good.

"It's absolutely more than I envisioned. It turned out absolutely great," he said.

lLpez credits Melissa Gutzwiller for that. She designed the wall.

"Really understanding the weight of the circumstance is incredibly humbling and I'm so proud I had the opportunity to be a part of it," Gutzwiller said.

Gutzwiller is the wife of a police officer herself. She said the area's backing of the memorial blew her away.

"Knowing that if anything ever happened to my husband that kind of support, my community would wrap around me and my family," she said.

Meanwhile Scott-Brown said she's proud of her father. And she's glad to know the memory of him and the other officers who gave their lives, will live on for years to come.

"I thank them for keeping him in mind and for giving them a wall of honor such as this. I think it's very great," she said.
