The University of Arizona Wildcat No. 25 men's and No. 12 women's track and field teams each had an athlete compete during day one of the Pac-12 Championships Combined Events.. Washington State's Mooberry Track and Field Complex played host for the decathletes and heptathletes. Senior Passalaqua earned all-conference honors in the event for the third-straight year in the heptathlon, taking third place overall. Redshirt sophomore Harrison Ivie finished in seventh place, claiming All-Pac-12 accolades for the first time in his career.
After seven events over two days, Passalaqua finished with 5,313 points overall, a personal-best score that was good for No. 8 in school history. She began the day with a mark of 18-11.25 (5.77m, 1.2 wind) in the long jump, tallying 780 points. In the javelin competition, Passalaqua had a personal-best toss of 113-10 (34.70m), the No. 9 mark in school history and good for 566 points. In the 800-meter race, Passalaqua clocked a time of 2:23.3 and scored 778 points. Amalie Iuel (USC) won with 5,378 points in first place and Alissa Brooks-Johns (Washington State) took second place with 5,325 points. Passalaqua led after six events by a narrow margin, with the entire competition coming down to the 800-meter race. Passalaqua's score of 5,313 is No. 36 in the country.
"I think the cold weather had an effect on my performance," Passalaqua said. "I am happy I was still able to score for the team and have a personal-best score even with the poor conditions. I put on all the layers of clothing I had and left all I had on the track. I'm excited to come back next weekend and put more points on the board for the Wildcats."
Ivie finished in seventh place overall after completing 10 events over two days with a personal-best score of 6,921. Ivie started the day with a time of 15.70 (1.9 wind) in the 110-meter hurdles, scoring 767 points. He threw the discus 131-3 (40.02m), the No. 2 mark of his career and added 665 points to his total. In the pole vault, Ivie had a clearance of 14-1.25 (4.30m) and scored 760 points. He had a toss of 176-5 (53.78m) in the javelin competition; the second-best throw of his career was good for 645 points. He posted a time of 4:57.44 in 1,500-meter race, tallying 575 points. Ivie's personal-best score of 6,921 is ranked No. 46 in the country.
Per the NCAA, the Heptathlon and Decathlon events are not contested at the Preliminary Championships Competition. Qualification to the championships in these two events is accomplished through a competitor's position on the national descending order list. The top 24 declared student-athletes in each of these two events will be accepted into the national championships. Declaration for these two events is completed during the one and only declaration period, which is prior to the Preliminary Championships Competition.
