Man accused of animal cruelty due in court

Posted: Updated:

A local man accused of animal cruelty faces more charges and is expected to appear in court Monday.

John Montross, 29, of Deerfield Township now faces charges for insurance fraud, false report of a felony, and improperly burying animals.

Last month, Montross was charged with animal cruelty after 71 dead calves were discovered on his property.

Dexter says the dead calves were found under hay and snow, west of Mount Pleasant. The Associated Press left phone messages Friday seeking comment from Montross and the county sheriff.
Montross is a member of the Deerfield Township Planning Commission.

He's set to be arraigned in Isabella County.
