An Orrick family got hit by the same tornado twice Saturday. The EF-2 tornado hit their home and business.
A 72-year-old grandmother, who has trouble walking, lived in an apartment above the family business. She needed to make her way down all the stairs to get to the basement. One of her grandsons wanted to make sure she survived.
"I was downstairs working in the restaurant. I was worried about my grandma, so I ran upstairs, grabbed her up. She can't walk well so I threw her on my back and ran down the stairs with her," Tim Heady said.
Heady's mother, Cheri Heady, is proud of her son and thankful he managed to get her mother-in-law into the basement of her family's restaurant, Fubbler's Cove.
"They are all OK. I'm very, very grateful for that," Cheri Heady said.
When the tornado hit, she and several of her six children ran to the basement at the family's home. Many of her other children ran to the basement at the family's restaurant.
"I had one son I couldn't get ahold of on the other side of town. It was devastating. I panicked," she said.
The family survived and is now reunited and cleaning up both their homes and business. They aren't alone. Neighbors and volunteers are helping families get back on their feet.
"They've been amazing. We have an amazing town," Cheri Heady said.
She says her son is amazing and remains humble. Tim Heady says he is not a hero but did get an "attaboy" from grandma.
"She just said thanks. She couldn't believe it. She is 72, and I don't think she's ever been through anything like that in her life," Tim Heady said.
Ten people survived the tornado in Fubbler's Cove basement, including employees and neighbors who had nowhere else safe to go.
The family is now focused on rebuilding.
