Film crew to shoot movie at local prison

Mid-Michigan will soon be featured in a new movie.

The upcoming film Heartlock will be set at the former maximum security prison in Standish, but the drama won't only put Mid-Michigan on the big screen. Locals hope it will also bring in big bucks.

"The local economy needs it. We need it desperately," said Perry Pelton, owner of Wheeler's Restaurant.

Businesses in downtown Standish have been hurting since the closure of the Standish max prison in 2009.

"It can't hurt. It gets somebody into town. Whatever we can do to get people in town is advantageous to the economy. They're going to be filling up with gas, they're going to be going to be going to restaurants, they're going to be sitting in a bar, they're going to spend some money here. They're going to be staying at the motels from my understanding," Pelton said.

Ken Holshoe, manager of Green Ace Hardware, said if the filmmakers need anything, his store is there.

"We're a full service hardware. We have multiple items and everything and if they get in a jam and they need something as easy as duct tape. I mean your local hardware is right there," Holshoe said.

When the Standish prison shut down, the local economy was greatly affected, and word that a movie crew could be coming into town for a three-week shoot has people in town saying good for the businesses. Some think it might bring a few more tourists into town too.

"People from all over probably want to come and see what's going on, you know. So I think that would be great for businesses around town," said Elizabeth Cunningham, a Standish resident.

The Michigan Department of Corrections said film crews will begin shooting Heartlock next week.
