SAGINAW, MI (WNEM) -

The identity of a man who police say used counterfeit money to pay for a Craigslist purchase has been learned.

Montez Conliffe, 31, is facing counterfeiting charges and one charge of obstructing a police officer.

Bradley McWilliams, 18, allegedly sold his video game console to Conliffe through Craigslist, only to get the fake bills in return.

McWilliams, 18, agreed to sell his console for $450. When McWilliams opened the bank envelope, the bills inside were all fake. Conliffe and the Playstation 4 were long gone.

"I showed him the PS4, the games and the controllers, he gave me the money and he took off," said Bradley. "I looked at it. I gave it to my older brother to look at, and then I called the police and they told me what to do."

Police put him in touch with the Secret Service. TV5 contacted the Secret Service as well, and found out it is investigating Bradley's case. The Secret Service said it is seeing an increase in counterfeit scams in the Flint area involving fake $50 and $100 bills.

The Secret Service wants people to keep an eye out for these bills and look for tell-tale signs of a fake. Signs like matching watermarks, security threads and pay attention to the person giving you the money. If they are willing and eager to pay you full price for your item, be suspicious. Not every deal and everyone may be as good as they seem.

The Secret Service also said that it has a person of interest in this case. As far as Bradley, the suspect will have to be charged, convicted and ordered to pay Bradley back. It could be a long time before he could see his money again.

Conlifee is currently in the Genesee County Jail.

If you feel you've received counterfeit money or are suspicious, call the Saginaw Secret Service office at 989-497-0580.
