Man extradited from Germany faces 9 felony charges

Posted: Updated:
BAY CITY, MI (WNEM) -
The Mid-Michigan man accused of running an illegal ponzi scheme was back in the area Friday as charges were brought against him.

Joel Wilson, 31, is facing multiple felony charges including racketeering. Wilson fled to Germany in 2012 after investigators started to close in.

The Bay County Courthouse was standing room only as Wilson was arraigned by video. He's facing nine felony charges, all stemming from a ponzi scheme in which the Attorney General's Office said the Saginaw native defrauded investors to the tune of $8 million done through a company called the Diversified Group.

Right around the time the Attorney General's Office filed a criminal complaint, Wilson traveled to Germany where he hasn't returned until he was extradited from overseas earlier this week.

His ties to Europe is what ultimately led the judge to impose a nearly $10 million bail.
