A 22-year-old Phoenix man is facing child abuse charges after allegedly throwing his toddler into a swimming pool in order to teach her a lesson.
Police said the incident happened on April 29.
Investigators said they obtained video of the ordeal on May 9 that shows Cory McCarthy throwing his 22-month-old daughter into the pool twice.
Each time, a witness quickly pulled the child out of the water and handed her back to the father.
Police said McCarthy is then seen dangling his daughter over the deep end of the pool before putting her back on the ground.
Prior to the incident, police said the little girl had been left unsupervised around the unfenced pool for about 25 minutes.
During that time the child can be seen dropping a puppy into the water.
Police said McCarthy told them he wanted to teach his daughter to be afraid of water so she'd stay away from the pool.
He also said it was punishment for drowning the puppy.
McCarthy has been booked on two counts of child abuse.
His daughter is staying with other family members.
