Boy's death prompts resignation of medical examiner

SAGINAW COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

A local medical examiner has resigned, partly because of a lawsuit related to the death of a 6-year-old boy.

Dr. Kanu Virani will no longer serve as Saginaw County's medical examiner.

Virani and the county face a lawsuit from Gift of Life Michigan. The organization says the county wouldn't hand over organs from Elijah Dillard, who died in March.

"We're always in favor of justice being served, but state law is very clear. Examiners can do their investigation, but organ donation should be able to go forward," said Gift of Life Chief Executive Officer Richard Piotrowski.

The medical examiner says he was just trying to preserve evidence for criminal prosecution."It is my job to review anything and everything with this body to see how he suffered. That is the medical examiner's job," said Virani.

Virani says he was trying to preserve evidence because Dillard's father is accused of killing the young boy. Police say it was the result of child abuse, and his father is facing murder charges.

Virani will continue to conduct autopsies.
