SHELBY COUNTY, TN -
(WMC) - An 8-year-old boy was rescued from a home where he spent hours locked in a room without food and was beaten with a red broom stick.

Charresa Noel, who is supposed to be the child's guardian, now faces child abuse and neglect charges.

The boy has a prescription to take medication at night that makes him drowsy, but investigators say Noel was giving him the drugs throughout the day.

"Pray for the family because they're going to need it," said Wanda Stewart of Memphis.

Police say Noel could not provide papers proving she has custody of the child. He's now with the Department of Children's Services.

When police took the child, they say he was hungry, because he had not been allowed to eat for an extended period of time.

Neighbors tell WMC Action News 5 they cannot believe any adult would treat a child so poorly.

Noel's bond was originally set at $100, but it has since been raised to $2,500.
