Frankenmuth prepares for balloon fest

FRANKENMUTH, MI (WNEM) -

There's plenty going on in Mid-Michigan over Memorial Day weekend.

The sky above Little Bavaria will be filled with hot air balloons for Frankenmuth's annual championship. Preparations for the festival got underway Friday.

Derrick Jones was getting his balloon basket ready Friday for the big Frankenmuth balloon festival. Besides being an event director he's also a pilot. He's excited about the three-day event which is in it's eighth year.

"We came up here with six balloons the first year, and of course we've been able to build a relationship with everybody in Frankenmuth," Jones said.

The wind is a big concern for balloonists and it looks like they're going to have pretty good conditions for flying this weekend.

"Balloons typically fly in 12 knot winds, 10 miles per hour in that area and I think that today will be our only 50-50 chance for this evening's flight, but I think we will be able to get it off," Jones said.

Meanwhile things are cooking in other parts of Frankenmuth in preparation for the balloon fest. The delicious aroma of Bob Murphy's barbecue can be smelled all across town.

"We started at about 4:30 this morning," Murphy said.

The whole town was being spruced up Friday in anticipation of thousands of weekend visitors. They'll be able to see pilots compete to see who's the king of the sky.

"We've got 31 pilots from all across the Midwest area and we're actually competing for the 2014 Balloons Over Bavaria champion," Jones said.

The annual Dog Bowl will also be in Frankenmuth this weekend. It runs Saturday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
