NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) -

Portions of southern Louisiana is under a tornado watch until 5 p.m.

The National Weather Service is investigating a possible tornado that touched down in Garyville. Witnesses report damage at Marathon Oil.

"As a result of the severe storm this morning, the Garyville refinery experienced some damage and loss of power to parts of the refinery. We are in the process of evaluating the damage and assessing the operations. We've made notifications to the appropriate local and federal agencies and there has been no offsite impact.," said a spokesman for the company.

Baileigh Rebowe, a communications spokeswoman for St. John, tells our media partners at Nola.com | The Times-Picayune the parish received sustained winds and heavy rainfall. She said reports of a tornado are unconfirmed.

A fire station in the parish received minor damage.

Some folks could see more than they need with some accumulation estimates of over 5-6 inches over the course of the next several days.

The good news is that since we have been so dry, the ground is able to absorb most of this rain. As the upper low moves closer, shower coverage will expand and almost everyone will see at the very least some rain before the end of the week.

With the upper low to the north, some of the greatest accumulations will remain north of the Louisiana's coast and perhaps even focused on the north shore and in Mississippi.

Clouds and rain will keep high temperatures down this afternoon and significant cooling has already been seen under the storms. Coverage could reach 80-100% Wednesday and down to 60% Thursday and 40% by Friday.

Expect drier and hotter by the weekend and into early next week.
