Members of a local community showed their support for neighbors after a tragic accident. Reuben Stutzman lives in Clare County's Sheridan Township near a family dealing with a tremendous loss.
"The whole community shares the sympathy," said Stutzman.
As a man backed out of his driveway late Monday afternoon, sheriff's deputies report he accidentally hit his 3-year-old daughter, Sydney Ackerman, who was on her bike.
"We heard the sirens go by and went over to see what was going on, and they told us there was a death in the family," Stutzman recalled.
The little girl died from her injuries. Now, members of the small rural community are trying to show their support to the grieving family. Stutzman and his wife took them food Tuesday evening and let the family know they are in their thoughts and prayers.
"In a community like this, prayer is what a lot of people do for each other ... and just be there. Help out whenever you can. That's what people do," Stutzman said.
He has 11 children of his own. The thought of a parent losing a child is agonizing. Stutzman said it's something you can't handle on your own. You need support from others, even a higher power.
"It is a sad thing. The grace of the Lord is the only way you can get over it. The only way," Stutzman added.
