SAGINAW, MI (WNEM) -

Saginaw County officials are ready to make some changes after firing the head of the animal shelter.

County Animal Control Director Kevin Wilken was ousted by the county commission at a special meeting Wednesday night.

Now Saginaw County leadership is looking to find a new leader for the animal care center.

"That person is going to have to display some skills and abilities to not only background and expertise in animal control and management and shelter management. But the ability to bring people together," said Mike Hanley, chairman of the Saginaw County Board of Commissioners.

He said the board has learned a valuable lesson after unanimously voting to fire Wilken.

"The next person will probably be more closely supervised early on so we can verify that they have the skills to get the job done," Hanley said.

Hanley said the search for a new animal control director starts immediately. He said he won't stop until they find the right person for the job.

"This has certainly been an unfortunate circumstance for the people and the animals of Saginaw County. Nobody's felt that more than me because my office has received all of those allegations and we've turned them over and investigated them ourselves. And all I can do is promise that we are going to do our best and we are going to make things right," Hanley said.

County officials hope to hire Wilken's replacement within the next two months.
