Holyoke PD tickets dump truck driver after collision with school bus

Posted: Updated:
HOLYOKE, MA (WSHM) -

A dump truck was involved in an accident with a school bus in Holyoke around 3:20 p.m. Thursday, sending nine students and both drivers to the hospital, according to Holyoke Superintendent Dr. Sergio Páez.

Holyoke police officials have confirmed that the driver of the dump truck was at fault and that he was issued a civil citation following the accident.

There were 30 students on the bus at the time of the accident, but none were seriously injured, Páez said.

According to Holyoke Police Chief James Neiswanger, most of the students suffered bumps and bruises. Six students were rushed to the hospital via ambulance while other students were taken to the hospital by their parents.

The bus driver suffered a non-life-threatening leg injury, which was the most severe injury sustained in the accident, Neiswanger said.

All of the students and both drivers were released from the hospital Thursday night.

The bus serviced the E. N. White School in Holyoke, which has students ranging from kindergarten to eighth grade.

The accident occurred at the corner of Lincoln and Pleasant streets, police said. It appears the school bus was turning left onto Pleasant Street when the front end of the dump truck crashed into the middle portion of the school bus.

Neighbors said the accident was extremely loud, which sprang many from the neighborhood into action. A group of concerned parents was at the accident scene about 3:45 p.m.

Holyoke Fire Department and EMS responded to the accident. Holyoke police had secured the accident scene with caution tape.

CBS 3's Michelle Kingston is on scene and will bring you updates as they are made available.
