Mark Torregrossa joined the First Warn 5 Weather Team in June 2014 for the second time. Mark was the chief meteorologist here at WNEM from 1995 to 2000.
Mark grew up in Waukegan, Il. on the shore of Lake Michigan, and became fascinated with weather thanks to the nasty weather of the 1970s. He witnessed the super outbreak of tornadoes in April 1974. Then Mark experienced the big ice storm in 1976, the blizzard of 1978, and the blizzard of 1979. All of the interesting weather made him want to study meteorology. So Mark attended Northern Illinois University, and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Meteorology in 1989.
He has worked for a weather consulting firm, Murray and Trettel, Inc., in Chicago, forecasting for utility companies and road commissions. His first job in television was at KGAN in Cedar Rapids, IA. He then became Chief Meteorologist at WPBN in Traverse City, MI. He moved down to Mid-Michigan in 1995, and has mostly lived in our area since then. He was Chief Meteorologist at WNEM from 1995 to 2000, and Chief Meteorologist at WEYI from 2003 to 2012. In between, he had a stint as Chief Meteorologist at WGBA in Green Bay, WI.
Mark's wife is from Reese, MI and this is home for Mark and his family. When the sun is shining on the weekends, Mark, his wife Lisa, and the two beagles, Daisy and Bagel are on the pontoon boat near Traverse City.
