Murderer heads for trial on escape, kidnap charges

IONIA, Mich. (AP) -

A convicted murderer who broke out of a Michigan prison in February will head to trial on escape, carjacking and kidnapping charges.

Michael Elliot faces arraignment June 10 in Ionia County Circuit Court after waiving a district court preliminary examination Monday.

Elliot was captured Feb. 3 in LaPorte County, Indiana, one day after escaping from western Michigan's Ionia Correctional Facility.

Officials say after the escape, Elliot stole a Jeep in Ionia with a woman inside. She got free uninjured and called 911 when they stopped for gas that night more than 100 miles away.

Police then chased and captured Elliot in another stolen vehicle.

He's serving life in prison for first-degree murder in the 1993 shooting of four people. A co-defendant admits pulling the trigger, and Elliot says he's innocent.
