Local school district might close school

Posted: Updated:

The Flint school district may close another school.

The district is looking at closing Flint Northern Alternative Academy.

"This is a place for them to come to get their education instead of just being pushed along," Dion Richardson-Bay said.

Richardson-Bay's niece is graduating from Flint Northern Alternative Academy this year. Something she said she may not have been on track to do at another school.

"Here it's more like considered an adult kind of school where you know you're at your pace, picking on things and you can ask those questions and things like that," Richardson-Bay said.

The idea of the school no longer being an option for students is not sitting well with her.

"All these schools closing and the budget and things is really a big pain. It's a headache, it just leaves parents wondering what's going to happen next," she said.

That's the question many are asking, now a proposal is on the table to not only close the alternative academy, but possibly layoff more than 250 of the Flint school district's staff as well.

"It shocks me at how we are going to run a capable school district next year after all of these layoffs," said school board member David Davenport.

Davenport believes there are other ways to deal with the $10.4 million deficit.

"I think we need to start with the superintendent by giving up his salary first before we even think about harming the education of the students, putting 40 something kids in a classroom like the contract, the agreement is saying. What I'm saying is that clearly these decisions are not student centered decisions, they are administration decisions, that they are trying to keep their head above water," he said.

Richardson- Bay said the district's decision leaves few options for parents.

"It's one thing to move to a different community, but we are here and everything is closing down and moving and then you're left, hanging and wondering, what am I going to do with my child. What school are they going to go to," she said.
