HARDIN COUNTY, KY (WAVE) - A woman was killed, three children were seriously injured and a man is hospitalized after a crash on Highway 313.

Kentucky State Police said around 10:35 p.m. on June 3 they received a call that a woman and her three children, ages 5, 4, and 7 months, had been kidnapped by knife point by Kyle David Thompson, 24, of Radcliff. Police said Thompson is a registered sex offender and the woman's ex-boyfriend.

According to KSP Trooper Jeff Gregory, the woman was driving a van and was able to escape. She called 911 from a home in the 3000 block of Wooldridge Ferry Road in Lebanon Junction. That's when police said Thompson got into the drivers seat of the 2006 Dodge van and took off with the children.

After police put out a description of the van, troopers said Thompson drove back by the home where investigators were still speaking with the woman. He then fled.

After a trooper caught up with the van and attempted to stop Thompson with his lights on, Thompson turned the van south on KY 313. KSP said the van went a short distance before Thompson crossed the center line and crashed into Jeep Liberty driven by Ashlee Berry.

Berry, 22, of Radcliff, died at the scene. The Hardin County coroner said Berry, who was from Las Vegas, was driving from Louisville, where she had just gotten off work at the Troll Pub Under The Bridge, to her home in Radcliff.

Berry was engaged to an active duty Fort Knox soldier in the 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division. The couple was set to be married in six weeks.

After learning of Berry's death, Ben Barker, from the Troll Pub, sent WAVE 3 News the following statement:

"Ashlee was an extraordinary woman that positively affected everyone in which she came in contact. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Ashlee's family and fiancée. Ashlee's senseless death has been a terrible loss to her family, friends, and the Louisville community. She will be profoundly missed. The Troll Pub and the City of Louisville will not be the same without her."

Wednesday night the three children who were injured in the crash were listed in serious condition at Kosair Children's Hospital. Thompson is at University Hospital where he is under troopers are watching him.

Thompson's stepfather said his stepson is the father to her youngest son. He shared pictures and described Thompson as a loving father.

Police said Thompson had a warrant out for his arrest from 2010 for failure to comply with the sex offender registry and had a probation violation on him from another kidnapping involving a 17-year-old. A grand jury will meet next week to determine if additional charges will be filed.
