Six local school districts face budget deficits

LANSING, MI (WNEM/AP) -

The State Department of Education has released the quarterly report of those districts that entered the school year with a budget deficit.

The list includes six in mid-Michigan. Ashley Community schools in Gratiot County is the only one expected to eliminate its deficit by the end of this month.

But Beecher, Saginaw, Bridgeport, and Perry schools are all expected to reduce their deficit.

The news is not so good for Flint, which is one of nine districts in the state that expect their deficit to grow.

Breakdown of the deficit districts report:

The remaining nine districts and charters expected to eliminate their deficit: Atlanta Community Schools, Alternative Path Academy, Ashley Community Schools, Menominee Area Public Schools, Bedford Public Schools, Avondale School District, Oak Park School District, Michigan Math and Science Academy and Ypsilanti Community Schools.

The 27 districts and charters that are expected to reduce their deficit: Benton Harbor Area Schools, Mackinaw City Public Schools, Beecher Community School District, Hancock Public Schools, Brighton Area Schools, East Detroit Public Schools, Clintondale Community Schools, Mt. Clemens Community Schools, Muskegon Heights Public School Academy, White Cloud School District, Pontiac School District, Hazel Park Schools, Vanderbilt Area School District, Saginaw Public Schools, Bridgeport Spaulding Community Schools, Perry Public Schools, Dearborn Heights School District No. 7, Hamtramck Public Schools, Redford Union Schools, River Rouge School District, Romulus Community Schools, Taylor School District, Westwood Community Schools, Ecorse Public Schools, Southgate Community Schools, Madison-Carver Academy and HEART Academy.

The nine districts that expect their deficit to grow: Alpena Public Schools, Albion Public Schools, Flint Community Schools, Pinckney Community Schools, Muskegon Public Schools, Bangor Public Schools, Lincoln Consolidated Schools, Detroit Public Schools, Highland Park Public School Academy.


The seven that began the school year in the black but expect to end the school year with a deficit: Battle Creek Montessori Academy, Iron Mountain Public Schools, North Adams-Jerome Public Schools, South Lake Schools, Muskegon Montessori Academy for Environmental Change, Detroit Public Safety Academy and Branch Line School.
