4th family sues Children's Hospital over fungal outbreak

Updated:
NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) -

A fourth family is suing Children's Hospital over a fungal disease that killed five patients.

John and Tina Scanlon said their daughter, Caroline, who was just over two weeks old, died after contracting mucormycosis. But the St. Charles Parish parents said they were told that the little girl acquired the fungus from somewhere outside the hospital, according to our partners at NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune.

Children's Hospital publicly acknowledged that five patients died in 2008 and 2009 after contracting the deadly infection. The Centers for Disease Control linked the outbreak to dirty hospital linens supplied by TLC Services.

The Scanlons are suing the hospital, TLC Services and the former director of housekeeping for Children's.

They said they were not told that just days after Caroline's death, another premature infant died in the neonatal intensive care unit because of the same fungus.
