Cleveland officials want to protect all renters from a silent killer, carbon monoxide

Posted: Updated:

Soon Cleveland city officials could make it mandatory for all apartment buildings to have carbon monoxide detectors inside every apartment.

Ohio law doesn't require them in commercial buildings.

Firefighters tell us the life saving device is one of your best warnings because you can't see smell or taste the poisonous gas.

"They are effective and they will warn you right away if you do have a high level of carbon monoxide.", says Assistant Cleveland Fire Chief Mike Darnell.

"We have had quite a few deadly CO runs in the city of Cleveland, so we do take them seriously.", says Darnell.

Soon every Cleveland Batallion Chief will get new gas meters to check for carbon monoxide in homes and apartments.

Most detectors start at about $20.
