Local police officers patrol with stun guns

FLINT, MI (WNEM) -

Some local police officers hit the streets on Wednesday with a new weapon of defense.

They, along with one of TV5's own, went through hands on training before being issued stun guns to carry on the streets.

Flint police Chief James Tolbert along with his officers were shocked as part of their stun gun training on Tuesday. On Wednesday, the officers hit the streets with stun guns on their belts.

Tolbert said he looked at the stun guns as just another tool for his officers to use. In fact, he said he hopes it's kind of a deterrent. If someone's misbehaving and they hear a stun gun charging, he hopes they might think twice.

"People know we have it. They know what it can do. Maybe just the upholstering of the weapon and the arcing of the weapon, they'll know we mean business and maybe that'll cool somebody down and back them. They need to understand that they need to comply with the officers," Tolbert said.
